Late Penalty Sends Cal Poly to 1-0 Opening-Night Defeat
8/27/2021 10:02:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly men's soccer junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado recorded five saves, but an 80th-minute retaken converted penalty from Santa Clara stood as the difference at Stevens Stadium as the Mustangs dropped their 2021 regular season opener to the Broncos, 1-0.
With Cal Poly playing its first match in 20 months and facing Santa Clara for just the third time in the last 21 years, an 80th-minute attempt from Broncos forward Oladayo Thomas was blocked. Cal Poly senior defender Jackson Brady, however, was red carded for a handball on the goal line.
Santa Clara forward Dominic Vegaalban's initial penalty attempt was stopped by Arce-Hurtado but, following a whistle for infringement, the retaken attempt was converted into the lower right corner.
Cal Poly, which forced Santa Clara goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet into three saves, enjoyed one final opportunity to square the scoreline in the 89th minute. Junior forward Nick Giacalone's header, however, was stopped by Mundet.
With Cal Poly outshot during the first half, 8-1, Arce-Hurtado chalked up four saves inside the opening 29 minutes to keep the match scoreless at the break.
Cal Poly's lone shot on target during the first half came in the 16th minute with freshman forward Drew Patterson – a 2020 transfer from Marist – turned away by Mundet.
Into the second half, Mustang freshman forward Ashton Alonge forced Mundet into a 72nd-minute save as one of Cal Poly's three shots on frame.
Cal Poly's two-game, season-opening road trip concludes on Monday, Aug. 30 at Saint Mary's. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Saint Mary's opened its season Thursday evening, dealing California a 1-0 defeat.
