SAN LUIS OBISPO – Returning six regular starters, 10 letterwinners and 53 percent of its goal production from the 2019 squad, the Cal Poly men's soccer program plays its first match in 20 months when opening the 2021 regular season on Friday, Aug. 27 at Santa Clara. Kickoff is 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, which concludes its season-opening road trip with a 4 p.m. matchup at Saint Mary's on Monday, Aug. 30. After opening its training camp on Aug. 10, Cal Poly – which saw its 2020 season cancelled – completed preparations for 2021 with a 1-0 road exhibition loss at UCLA (Aug. 21) before topping Division II Fresno Pacific on Tuesday at home as three freshmen goalscorers helped finalize a 4-1 decision. Santa Clara, which produced a scoreless draw at No. 8 Stanford (Aug. 21) in its third and final exhibition match, finished its postponed 2020 season this past spring with a 4-4-0 mark. Saint Mary's, which opens its season Thursday evening against California, earned 13 points in the preseason edition of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll to finish 25 votes behind No. 25 Coastal Carolina.
