Cal Poly Rallies to Upend Saint Mary’s, 2-1
8/30/2021 7:37:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Second half goals 11 minutes apart from freshmen defenders Conner Leber and Jacob Glass (above) overturned a 60th-minute effort from Saint Mary's as the Cal Poly men's soccer program surged back Monday afternoon to chalk up a 2-1 road victory.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado recorded four saves for Cal Poly (1-1-0), which placed five of eight shot attempts on target.
Saint Mary's – West Coast Conference runners-up from last season – limited Cal Poly to just one first-half shot attempt but, with Arce-Hurtado making three saves in the period, the two programs took a 0-0 scoreline into the break.
Saint Mary's, however, broke through 15 minutes after the break with Jack Vestberg converting a ball from fellow midfielder David Brog.
The Mustangs required just five minutes though to equalize as senior midfielder Neil Boyal played a cross for Leber, who fired his first collegiate goal past Gaels goalkeeper Nicholas Lapinid.
Cal Poly forced Lapinid into two more saves with junior defender Luis Rodriguez turned away in the 79th and Boyal in the 86th. Cal Poly outshot Saint Mary's in the second half, 7-5, and forced four corner kick opportunities to the host's one.
Monday's victory marked Cal Poly head coach Steve Sampson's 100th collegiate victory. Sampson, who finished 64-19-19 with Santa Clara (1986-90), owns 36 victories with the Mustangs and a now 100-62-31 career collegiate mark.
The Mustangs return home to open a three-game home stand on Friday, Sept. 3 versus San Diego State. Kickoff from Alex G. Spanos is 7 p.m.
