Cal Poly Plays Out 1-1 Draw with San Diego State in Friday Home Opener
9/3/2021 10:36:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A 55th-minute strike from Cal Poly men's soccer junior forward Max Kleinhammes (above) cancelled out San Diego State defender Tadej Pirtovsek's 46th-minute effort as the Mustangs finished their 2021 home opener at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in a 1-1 draw with the Aztecs Friday evening.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado recorded two saves for Cal Poly (1-1-1), which took a scoreless deadlock into the break. Just 46 seconds into the second half, however, a corner kick from Aztecs midfielder Inigo Villaldea was headed down in the penalty area by defender Kyle Colonna for Pirtovsek, who fired past Arce-Hurtado.
Cal Poly needed just nine minutes to equalize as a throw-in from freshman defender Conner Leber landed inside the San Diego State penalty area and fell for Kleinhammes, who scored his first collegiate goal in his first career start.
Cal Poly, which outshot San Diego State, 12-7, and placed half of the attempts on target, forced Aztecs goalkeeper Jacob Castro into five saves.
The Mustangs produced opportunities to win the match during each overtime period with senior defender Andrew Forth first turned away in the initial half. In the 106th minute, freshman forward Drew Patterson whistled a shot through penalty-box traffic that was caught by Castro.
Cal Poly continues its three-game home stand against San Francisco on Monday, Sept. 6. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
