Cal Poly Tops San Francisco in Monday Matchup, 3-0
9/6/2021 7:02:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Forward Conner Leber and fellow freshman Jacob Glass each scored their team leading second goals either side of senior defender Andrew Forth's 34th-minute penalty Monday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program furthered its unbeaten run to three matches with a 3-0 victory against San Francisco at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado chalked up three saves to record his first shutout of the season for Cal Poly (2-1-1), which kept San Francisco (1-3-0) without a shot attempt for the opening 27 minutes. Three minutes later, freshman forward Max Kleinhammes played a pass into the penalty area for Leber, who, after taking a couple touches, fired past San Francisco goalkeeper Charlie McKay at the right post.
Cal Poly doubled its lead in the 34th with a foul from San Francisco defender Elias Thomas in the top left corner of the penalty box on Mustang sophomore forward James Burkholder resulting in a penalty call. Forth stepped to the spot and converted his opportunity at the right post for a 2-0 advantage.
The Mustangs rounded off the 3-0 scoreline in 73rd with senior midfielder Neil Boyal's free kick from the left side of the penalty area falling for defender Josh Graham, who headed for Glass. The reigning Big West Conference Freshman of the Week honoree, Glass headed past McKay for the 3-0 scoreline.
Arce-Hurtado, the reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week honoree, recorded saves in the 80th and 83rd to preserve Cal Poly's eventual clean sheet.
Ten separate Mustangs enjoyed shot attempts on Monday.
Cal Poly enjoys a 10-day break before closing its three-game home stand on Thursday, Sept. 16 versus defending Western Athletic Conference champion Grand Canyon. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
