Overtime Goal Undoes Cal Poly Comeback versus No. 25 Grand Canyon
9/16/2021 10:16:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's soccer program scored goals in the 87th and 89th minutes Thursday evening to force overtime against No. 25 Grand Canyon, but a 98th-minute free kick from Lopes forward Marco Afonso undid the comeback as the Mustangs fell at Alex G. Spanos Stadium 3-2.
Grand Canyon (5-1-0) took the lead Thursday with its first shot on target in the 62nd minute. Midfielder Justin Rasmussen then doubled the Lopes lead on 82 minutes, taking an upfield pass from Marios Andreou and firing past Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado at the left post.
Cal Poly, which had a three-match unbeaten run snapped, saw a headed attempt from freshman defender Jacob Glass stopped by Grand Canyon goalkeeper Rafael Guerrero in the 67th before freshman forward Nathan Colley struck the post in the 68th. Senior defender Josh Graham's headed attempt was also turned away by Guerrero in the 80th.
Three minutes from full time, however, senior midfielder Neil Boyal (above) found Glass with a corner kick at the right post and the Scotland native headed his Big West Conference leading third goal past Guerrero. For Boyal, the assist was his Big West best fourth of 2021.
Just 113 seconds later, Mustang freshman defender Conner Leber played a pass at the left edge of the Grand Canyon penalty area for Boyal, who curled in his first goal of the season at the right post to tie the matchup.
Into overtime, Cal Poly cleared a 97th minute shot from defender Miguel Prado off the goal line before a foul at the top of the penalty area resulted in the eventual game-winning free kick from Afonso, whose second goal of the evening bested Arce-Hurtado near the right post.
Cal Poly resumes action at No. 15 Loyola Marymount on Monday, Sept. 20. Kickoff from Sullivan Field is 7 p.m.
