SAN LUIS OBISPO – Forward Ocean Salari (above) required just four minutes to complete his brace and fellow freshmen Jackson Kestler and Nathan Colley also found the back of the Fresno Pacific net Tuesday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program completed preparations for the 2021 regular season with a 4-1 exhibition victory.
Cal Poly grabbed Tuesday's initial lead just after the six-minute mark with junior forward Nick Giacalone swinging a ball into the Fresno Pacific penalty area for Kestler, who slotted his scoring attempt past Sunbirds goalkeeper Hunter Shephard.
The Mustangs held the lead for 51 minutes until a foul at the top of the Fresno Pacific penalty box in the 58th resulted in Sunbirds forward Fellipe Souza firing a free kick past Mustang sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner.
Cal Poly, however, regained the lead just six minutes later as Colley – after seeing a penalty attempt saved by Fresno Pacific goalkeeper Hunter Johnson only to re-take the kick following an infringement call – converted his second opportunity.
Salari then added another penalty in the 67th before notching his second goal in the 71st after receiving an upfield pass from freshman forward Ashton Alonge.
Cal Poly outshot the Division II Sunbirds, 17-7. Giacalone led all players with four attempts.
Cal Poly opens the 2021 regular season on Friday, Aug. 27 at Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs then visit Saint Mary's on Monday, Aug. 30 (4 p.m.) before hosting San Diego State on Friday, Sept. 3 (7 p.m.).
