Hunter Rodrigues passed for 265 yards and three touchdowns and also ran two yards for another score for UC Davis (2-1, 2-1 Big Sky). Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. rushed for 105 yards and one score while Trent Tompkins added 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Aggies.
Cal Poly held early 3-0 and 10-7 leads by taking advantage of a pair of UC Davis turnovers in the first seven minutes of the game.
Rodrigues was sacked by linebacker Lance Vecchio for an eight-yard loss on the first offensive play of the game and fumbled the ball, recovered by Mustang linebacker Matt Shotwell at the Davis 8-yard line.
After three rushing plays netted five yards, Cal Poly settled for a 20-yard field goal by Colton Theaker just two minutes into the game.
After UC Davis scored a touchdown for a 7-3 lead and forced a Cal Poly punt on the next drive, backup Aggie quarterback Miles Hastings threw a pass that was intercepted by defensive back Brandon Davis and returned 55 yards for a touchdown and a 10-7 Mustang lead with 7:48 to go in the opening period.
UC Davis scored the next 52 points – seven touchdowns and a field goal – to turn the game around.
CJ Cole ended the Aggie run with a two-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter and Hunter Raquet connected with Noah Rasheed on a 16-yard touchdown pass in the final two minutes of the game.
Cal Poly mustered 298 yards in total offense – 89 on the ground and 209 more through the air.
Starting quarterback Jalen Hamler completed seven of 16 passes for 74 yards and, for the second straight week, was sacked seven times. His backup, Hunter Raquet, connected on nine of 16 passes for 135 yards and one score. He was sacked twice.
Lepi Lataimua led the Mustang ground attack with 56 yards on 13 carries. Quentin Harrison was Cal Poly's top receiver with four catches for 45 yards.
Shotwell collected 11 tackles and Isaiah Jernagin added 10 for Cal Poly. The interception by Davis was his first as a Mustang, but his second touchdown as he recovered a fumble in the end zone versus Weber State in 2019. Aaron Cooper nabbed his first theft midway through the third quarter but Cal Poly couldn't capitalize.
Cal Poly plays at Eastern Washington next Saturday.
