FULLERTON – Freshman righthander Bailey Doherty – in just her second collegiate appearance and start – tossed a complete-game, no-hitter with 12 strikeouts Friday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program opened a doubleheader versus Boise State with a 2-0 triumph at Cal State Fullerton's Anderson Family Field. Doherty also homered in game No. 2, but Cal Poly was edged, 7-6.
During Friday's opening 2-0 victory, Doherty (1-1) – who faced just two hitters over the minimum – struck out the Boise State side in the top of the first and two more in the second before handing herself the only run support required by belting a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the second.
Back in the circle, Doherty was perfect through Boise State's first 10 spots in the lineup before walking center fielder Kelsey Lalor with one down in the fourth. She retired the next two hitters to cap the fourth, however, before senior designated player Shelby Jeffries doubled Cal Poly's lead with a leadoff homer to start the bottom of the fourth.
Doherty returned in the fifth and issued her second and final walk. She struck out another Boise State hitter in the fifth inning and two more apiece in the sixth and seventh to complete the first no-hitter by a Mustang since righthander Lindsey Chalmers blanked UC Davis on April 14, 2018.
Doherty's 12 strikeouts were the most by a Mustang since righthander and 2017 All-America honoree Sierra Hyland struck out 13 CSU Bakersfield hitters on March 25, 2017.
Senior center fielder Noellah Ramos produced two of Cal Poly's five hits during Friday's opener.
During Friday's second matchup, Cal Poly (1-2) took the initial lead at the first opportunity as senior first baseman Hailey Martin produced a one-out single in the top of the first to drive home freshman right fielder Sydney Frankenberger.
With junior lefthander Krystyna Allman starting game No. 2 for Cal Poly, Boise State equalized in the second with left fielder Jordyn Hutchins hitting a one-out solo homer.
Boise State (4-3) then surged ahead in the third as Hutchins followed back-to-back Broncos singles by reaching on an error by Martin at first base – a miscue that allowed two runs to cross home plate. Right fielder Ashlyn Adams then singled in Hutchins to run Boise State's lead to 4-1.
The Mustangs, however, regained the lead at the next opportunity. Doherty opened the scoring with her second collegiate homer, a two-run shot to center field. Jeffries then produced a run-scoring hit to tie the matchup before Martin handed the Mustangs a 6-4 advantage with a two-run base hit.
Doherty took over for Allman in the circle with two down in the bottom of the third and proceeded to retire the first four hitters faced. She stranded two runners to close the fifth but, in the sixth, surrendered a two-out, three-run homer to Lalor as Boise State went back ahead, 7-6.
Cal Poly enjoyed one final chance to take regain the lead in the top half of the seventh, but stranded two baserunners to close the matchup.
Cal Poly resumes action and opens its home slate at Bob Janssen Field when hosting Saint Mary's for a three-game, March 6-7 series. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 6.
