Doherty Strikes Out 10 in Opener, Condon Makes History as Cal Poly Sweeps Doubleheader
3/6/2021 3:48:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman righthander Bailey Doherty tossed a complete-game, three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the Cal Poly softball program – playing its first home game in 22 months – opened a Saturday doubleheader against Saint Mary's at Bob Janssen Field with a 9-1, six-inning victory. Cal Poly completed the sweep in game No. 2 with a 6-4 win.
With Cal Poly's opening victory, Mustang head coach Jenny Condon became just the seventh Big West Conference coach to reach 400 career wins. After baseball head coach Larry Lee (2003-current) and softball's Lisa Boyer (1989-2004), Condon became just the third coach in Cal Poly Athletics Department history to reach 400 career wins.
During Saturday's opening 9-1 victory – Cal Poly's first home game since May 11, 2019 – Doherty (2-1) struck out two of three Saint Mary's hitters in the top of the first. Cal Poly opened the scoring in the bottom half through a two-out, run-scoring groundout from junior third baseman Maddie Amos.
Doherty then struck out the Saint Mary's side in the second before Cal Poly tacked on three more runs in the bottom half as sophomore second baseman Juju Sargent delivered a two-run single before scoring herself through a two-out base hit from senior designated player Shelby Jeffries.
Doherty added two more strikeouts in the third, retiring the first 10 Saint Mary's hitters faced before Gaels second baseman Marissa Montelongo singled with one down in the top half of the fourth. Doherty conceded her second hit and the only Saint Mary's run in the fifth after third baseman Julie McCormack produced a one-out sacrifice fly that plated pinch runner Bry Waters.
Held scoreless to close the third, Cal Poly added four more runs in the fourth with Saint Mary's righthanded reliever Marissa Woolsey issuing three bases-loaded walks en route to an 8-1 Mustangs lead.
Cal Poly secured the run-rule decision in the bottom of the sixth as Doherty singled into center field to score senior pinch runner Sarah Wulff and end the matchup.
Sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger enjoyed a game high two hits in the opener.
During Saturday's second win, Cal Poly once more took the lead at the first chance as senior first baseman Hailey Martin singled home Jeffries with two down in the bottom of the first.
With Jeffries facing just three over the minimum and holding Saint Mary's hitless through three, Cal Poly doubled its lead in the bottom half of the third as Jeffries followed a leadoff double from Frankenberger and a single by senior center fielder Noellah Ramos with a run-scoring base hit up the middle. Martin then doubled the advantage once more with a two-run single down the right field line as Cal Poly took a 4-0 edge into the fourth.
Saint Mary's notched both of its runs in the top of the fourth, despite junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (1-0) – who took over from Jeffries in the circle with two baserunners on and zero outs – striking out three Gaels.
Cal Poly grabbed two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Saint Mary's completed the scoring in the fifth with catcher Hannah Chew singling in shortstop Jayda Alaan and in the seventh as McCormack hit a two-out solo homer.
Doherty tossed the final two innings for Cal Poly to record her first career save.
