Cal Poly Falls At Long Beach State in Big West Opener
12/30/2021 9:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Junior forward Julia Nielacna and junior guard Maddie Willett both scored in double figures but the Cal Poly women's basketball team fell to Long Beach State Thursday in its Big West Conference opener 76-54.
Nielacna had team-highs of 13 points and six rebounds for the Mustangs (1-9, 0-1 BWC), who were playing without senior forward Hannah Scanlan who had led Cal Poly in scoring in each of the previous two games. Willett added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
While Cal Poly shot 42 percent from the field and made a season-high seven threes, the Mustangs also matched a season-high with 23 turnovers which Long Beach State (8-1, 1-0 BWC) turned into 20 points.
The Beach, who came into the game one of the nation's top teams in steals, had 15 on the night while also shooting 48 percent from the field. Long Beach State had four players score in double figures, led by Justina King's 18 points.
Another discrepancy was at the free throw line as Long Beach State attempted 23 free throws while the Mustangs took just nine.
Neither team scored for over the first three minutes of the game. After Long Beach State got out to a 4-0 lead, a pair of threes by Nielacna and freshman guard Annika Shah gave Cal Poly its one and only lead of the game at 6-4 with 4:38 left in the first quarter.
After taking a 15-10 lead into the second quarter, Long Beach State opened the second quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 13 point lead. The Beach led by as many as 18 in the quarter but Cal Poly finished the quarter strong on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 13 heading into halftime.
The Mustangs came out the gates firing in the third quarter with a 6-0 run to get it back to within seven at 36-29. However, that is as close as Cal Poly got the rest of the game as Long Beach State responded with a 10-0 run of its own to push the lead back up to 17.
The Mustangs were scheduled to face Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. However, on Wednesday it was announced that due to COVID protocols within the Titan program the game would be cancelled.
Cal Poly will now turn its attention to its first two home games of Big West play next week when hosting UCSB Thursday at 7 p.m. and CSUN Saturday at 2 p.m.
