Cal Poly Sustains First Big West Loss Saturday at UC Irvine
10/9/2021 9:16:00 PM | Men's Soccer
IRVINE – The Cal Poly men's soccer program dropped its first Big West Conference match of the season Saturday evening as a 60th-minute goal from UC Irvine forward Axel Adler decided a 1-0 loss at Anteater Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado produced two saves for Cal Poly (4-5-2, 2-1-1), which was outshot by UC Irvine (4-7-2, 2-1-1), 12-5.
With Saturday's defeat, Cal Poly lost its share of first place atop the Big West Conference standings, slipping into a second-place tie alongside UC Irvine. Both the Mustangs and Anteaters trail UC Santa Barbara by three points after the Gauchos defeated CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, 3-0.
UC Irvine outshot Cal Poly during the first half, 9-1, but Arce-Hurtado turned away the only shot on target he faced in the 39th to help send the match scoreless into the break.
Arce-Hurtado recorded a second save in the 51st before Cal Poly produced its lone shot on target a minute later as freshman defender Logan Thralls was stopped by Anteaters goalkeeper Gordon Botterill.
UC Irvine, however, found the game-winner in the 60th minute with midfielder Francesco Montanile setting up Adler, who fired his first goal of the season into the top left corner of the Mustang net.
Cal Poly recorded just one shot attempt following UC Irvine's goal.
Cal Poly plays three of its next four games at home, starting with a Wednesday, Oct. 13 matchup against Cal State Fullerton. The Mustangs then host UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 16. Both games kick off at 7 p.m.
