Mustangs Top Cal State Fullerton to Stay in Second Place
10/13/2021 9:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Midfielder Nathan Colley (above) and fellow freshman Ori Bitton each scored their first collegiate goals Wednesday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program recorded its third shutout victory in five Big West Conference matches with a 2-0 win against Cal State Fullerton inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado earned his fourth clean sheet of the year with two saves for Cal Poly (5-5-2, 3-1-1), which improved to 10 points in the Big West standings to take over sole possession of second place. The Mustangs still trail first place UC Santa Barbara (8-3-3, 4-0-1) by three points in the table as the programs face off at Spanos Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 16. With a sellout crowd expected for the Blue-Green rivalry match, kick off is set for 7 p.m.
Cal Poly produced just three shots on goal against Cal State Fullerton with senior forward Manny Perez turned away by Titans goalkeeper Andrea Bonavia in the ninth minute. The Mustangs, however, found Wednesday's game-winner in the 15th as the ball caromed off a Titans defender for Colley, whose shot clanged off the left post and past Bonavia for the 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs doubled that lead just 90 seconds after the restart as junior defender Jackson Brady crossed for Bitton from the right edge of the Cal State Fullerton penalty area. Bitton then fired in front of goal for the 2-0 advantage,
The Titans outshot Cal Poly, 14-7, but Arce-Hurtado turned away Cal State Fullerton in the 36th and 86th minutes to preserve the lead.
