Cal Poly Takes Over Share of First with UC San Diego Win
10/6/2021 9:37:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Manny Perez's 73rd-minute goal marked the difference Wednesday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program took over a share of first place atop the Big West Conference standings with a 1-0 victory versus UC San Diego at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado was called upon to make just a single save for Cal Poly (4-4-2, 2-0-1), which stayed unbeaten in Big West action and climbed into first place alongside rival UC Santa Barbara (6-3-2, 2-0-1) on seven points. UC Santa Barbara entered Wednesday's action leading Cal Poly by two points in the table, but relinquished sole possession of first place after conceding a goal to UC Irvine with 15 seconds remaining in regulation and settling for a 1-1 draw.
Perez (above) hit the cross bar just 88 seconds after kickoff on one of his three shot attempts and Mustang senior defender Jackson Brady was turned away by UC San Diego goalkeeper Dominic Peters in the 38th minute as the game reached halftime scoreless.
Cal Poly produced just three second-half shot attempts, but found the game-winner 17 minutes from full time as defender Ori Bitton played a pass toward the penalty area for fellow freshman Daniel Normann, who flicked on to Perez for his second goal of the season.
Both Bitton and Normann earned their first collegiate assists on Perez's goal.
Cal Poly resumes action with a 7 p.m. matchup at UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 9.
