SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior forward Angel De Leon's 85th-minute equalizing goal leveled the scoreline late Saturday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program completed preparations for the 2019 regular season with a 1-1 exhibition draw against Cal State Monterey Bay inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
During a match that featured three, 30-minute periods, Cal State Monterey Bay midfielder Luis Lopez scored Saturday's opening goal in the 25th minute after a lofted ball from defender Jordan Sime fell into the Mustang penalty area. Lopez latched onto the ball and fired past Mustang junior goalkeeper Jason Hernandez from six yards away.
Cal Poly was kept without a shot attempt until graduate forward Spencer Held's header was turned away Otters goalkeeper Rasmus Jonsson in the 42nd minute.
Mustang sophomore forward Reagan Rice saw his attempt stopped by Otters goalkeeper Trevor Peterson in the 62nd before Cal Poly produced the equalizer five minutes from full time. It was Rice earning the assist by playing a pass to the top of the Cal State Monterey Bay penalty area for De Leon (above), whose shot from distance found the right corner of the net.
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado produced three saves in 30 minutes of action.
The Mustangs open the 2019 regular season at Utah Valley on Friday, Aug. 30. The road trip concludes at San Diego on Monday, Sept. 2.
Cal Poly's 2019 home opener comes on Tuesday, Sept. 10 versus Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m.
