TEMPE, Ariz. — Cal Poly led at four occasions during the first quarter at Arizona State on Sunday, including a 10-9 lead more than seven minutes in, but the Sun Devil women's basketball team responded in Desert Financial Arena, coming back for a 66-41 win at home.
Freshman point guard Abbey Ellis gave the Mustangs their first lead of the evening two minutes from the opening tip, driving for a layup to put Cal Poly up 4-3.
Maddie Vick, a redshirt freshman guard out of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, added a layup with 5:53 remaining in the first to regain a 6-5 advantage for the Mustangs, before junior forward Sierra Campisano scored in the paint to establish an 8-7 Cal Poly lead a minute afterward.
Ellis scored on another layup with 2:54 left in the quarter to put the Mustangs ahead 10-9. Following an offensive rebound, however, ASU's Reili Richardson knocked down a 3-pointer the next trip up the floor to take the lead back for good for the Sun Devils, 12-10, on the way to ending the period with a 15-10 lead.
The Sun Devils (3-1) were first in the others-receiving-votes category in the most recent USA Today Coaches Poll, plus third in the latest AP Top 25 ORV category.
Just over eight minutes into the second quarter, Taya Hanson sank a 3 to push the ASU lead to as many as 14 before the break, 28-14, while capping a 19-4 swing, but the Mustangs closed to within 11 by intermission, as four free throws (two apiece for Ellis and grad forward Alicia Roufosse) made it 29-18 at halftime.
Arizona State stretched its lead to as many as 23 in the third quarter, moving ahead 43-20 thanks to a Bre'yanna Sanders 3 with 6:04 to play in the period. The Mustangs (1-4) chipped away at the lead, cutting the gap to 49-32 on a layup by forward Kirsty Brown late in the quarter, ultimately ending the third trailing 52-32.
In the fourth, junior wing Hannah Peterson converted a layup with 6:29 left to bring Cal Poly within 57-38, but ASU answered with five of the next six points to take a 62-39 advantage on a 3 by Iris Mbulito at the 4:58 mark.
Campisano finished with a team-high 21 points, shooting 7-for-15 overall from the floor, in addition to 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also added seven rebounds, three steals and a block.
Ja'Tavia Tapley, who came into the game No. 2 throughout the Pac-12 with a .667 field-goal percentage on the year, shot 8-for-12 en route to a 23-point night for ASU.
