STANFORD – Senior righthander Lindsey Chalmers (above) tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout Friday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program opened the Stanford Nike Invitational with a 3-0 victory against Santa Clara inside Smith Family Stadium.
The Mustangs (5-6) notched the only run Chalmers (3-2) required during the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore first baseman Hailey Martin led off with a walk, moved to second base through a sacrifice bunt from junior right fielder Crimson Kaiser and advanced to third though a single by junior designated player Noa Yakir. Junior left fielder Sydney James then delivered a run-scoring infield hit for a 1-0 Mustang lead.
Cal Poly doubled its lead just two batters into the bottom of the third as senior shortstop Chelsea Convissar followed junior catcher Makenna Young's leadoff single with a run-scoring double. Three batters later and after senior center fielder Amanda Sandoval and senior third baseman Stephanie Heyward produced back-to-back singles, Kaiser drove a run-scoring base hit up the middle to complete Cal Poly's scoring.
In the circle, Chalmers allowed just four hits through the opening five innings before retiring Santa Clara (0-6) in order during the sixth. She conceded one more hit in the top of the seventh, but never allowed a Bronco baserunner past second the entire afternoon.
Cal Poly continues Stanford Nike Invitational action on Saturday, Feb. 24 versus Santa Clara (12 noon) and Stanford (2:30 p.m.).
