DAVIS, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's basketball team cut UC Davis' lead to two possessions with just under a minute to play on Wednesday night at The Pavilion, but the Aggies held on late for an 83-75 home win, staying in first place in the Big West Conference.
Cal Poly jumped out to a 13-8 lead on a layup from junior Lynn Leaupepe just over six minutes into the first quarter.
A 3-pointer by junior guard Gabby Grupalo then gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the evening, 22-14 with 49 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The Aggies (20-6, 11-2) battled back to regain the lead at 33-31 on a Dani Nafekh jumper 4:26 before halftime, ultimately going to the break up 39-37.
A 20-6 run propelled UC Davis to its largest lead of the game, 62-47, with 3:42 left in the third before the Mustangs scored eight straight to end the quarter down 62-55 following a buzzer-beating hook shot by senior forward Hannah Gilbert.
UC Davis moved back in front 75-60 with 4:48 remaining in the fourth, but Cal Poly (10-16, 6-8) again answered with an 11-2 run, as a basket from Lynn Leaupepe narrowed the deficit to 77-71 with 52 seconds left (preceding a 79-73 margin at the 37-second mark).
From there, however, the Aggies went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line to hang on.
Dynn Leaupepe finished with 23 points, while Gilbert had 20 points, 12 rebounds & three blocks, and Lynn Leaupepe added 14 points.
Dynn moved from 17th to 14th in career scoring all-time at Cal Poly (now with 995 points), while Gilbert upped her career rebounding total to 657 boards, elevating to No. 6 in school history.
The Mustangs, on pace to break the single-season school record for free-throw shooting percentage (.758), went 14-of-15 from the foul line Wednesday.
Cal Poly will return home to host Senior Day in Mott Athletics Center vs. Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, March 1, with a pregame ceremony set to honor Gilbert and Amanda Lovely prior to the 5 p.m. tipoff.
