SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A trio of Mustangs scored in double-figures Thursday night, but the Hawai'i women's basketball team shot 56.9 percent and withstood a fourth-quarter Cal Poly rally for an 87-79 win at Mott Athletics Center.
Mustang junior Lynn Leaupepe nearly recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and corralling nine rebounds.
Senior forward Hannah Gilbert had 14 points and six boards.
Redshirt junior forward Mary Kate Evans added 11 points off the bench, while sophomore point guard Dye Stahley distributed a team-high five assists to go along with six points.
Cal Poly shot 29-of-68 from the floor overall, and the Rainbow Wahine went 29-of-51.
Sarah Toeaina scored a game-high 25 points for Hawai'i (6-10 overall, 2-2 Big West), the defending conference tournament champions. The Wahine led 22-16 after the opening quarter and 43-37 at halftime.
After holding a 62-55 advantage to start the fourth period, UH took its largest lead of the evening with 3:05 remaining, at 76-62 via a Toeaina jumper.
Cal Poly came back to close the deficit to 84-79 with 16 seconds left — as an Evans three-point play finished a 17-8 run — but the Wahine knocked down three of four ensuing free-throw opportunities in the waning moments to hold on.
The Mustangs (6-11, 2-3) will head back on the road to continue Big West action on Saturday, visiting CSUN for a 4 p.m. tipoff at The Matadome in Northridge.
Gilbert will enter the game 11 points away from becoming the 13th student-athlete in school history to reach the career 1,000-point mark.
