SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior righthander Sierra Hyland produced a seven-strikeout effort as the Cal Poly softball program opened a three-game series versus UC Davis with a 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field. Behind a complete-game, two-hitter with a career high eight strikeouts from sophomore righthander Lindsey Chalmers (top) during game No. 2, Cal Poly completed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-0 triumph.
During Saturday's opening game, Hyland (12-4) struck out the UC Davis side during the top of the first inning and Cal Poly grabbed the game's only lead in the bottom half as senior first baseman Breana West doubled to right center with two down to score sophomore designated player Stephanie Heyward.
Cal Poly (23-20, 6-8) then doubled its lead in the second with sophomore shortstop Chelsea Convissar producing a two-out single to bring home senior right fielder Betsy Colburn.
Hyland, meanwhile, struck out seven of the first 11 Aggies she saw and faced just one hitter over the minimum through the opening four and one-third innings. She walked Aggie first baseman Kelly Zboralske with one down in the top of the fifth before finally yielding a single to second baseman Meghan Bradbury.
Offensively, Hyland padded Cal Poly's lead in the fifth by singling up the middle to bring home Heyward. Colburn – who matched a career high with three hits – and freshman catcher Makenna Young then each added two-out, run-scoring singles to boost Cal Poly's lead to 5-0.
UC Davis (14-29, 3-11) eventually pushed across its lone run in the top of the sixth with third baseman Alexis Carney singling to plate center fielder Brianna Warner for the 5-1 disadvantage.
Heyward, Young and Convissar each finished with two hits during the opener.
During Saturday's second victory, Chalmers (9-11) retired six of the first seven hitters faced and the Mustang lineup staked her to a 2-0 lead during the bottom of the second. With one down and sophomore pinch runner Alina Goodrum on second base, junior second baseman Ashley Tornio doubled under the glove of Warner in center field to score the game's opening run. Young then doubled off the base of the left field wall to score Tornio.
The Mustangs went up 3-0 in the third with West singling up the middle to score sophomore center fielder Amanda Sandoval.
In the circle, Chalmers kept UC Davis hitless until right fielder Megan Salazar singled to open the third. Young eventually picked off Salazar at first base and Chalmers failed to allow an Aggie baserunner past first the remainder of the day.
Chalmers returned to strike out two Aggies in both the fourth and fifth innings before striking out the UC Davis side in the sixth. She allowed just her second hit of the game in the seventh.
The Mustangs added two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead with Sandoval following a leadoff triple by Heyward with a run-scoring double before Hyland singled home Sandoval.
Young completed the scoring for Cal Poly in the sixth by belting her second career home run to left field.
Cal Poly, which earned its first home series win versus UC Davis since 2008, closes the three-game set versus the Aggies with a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, May 1.
