SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior righthander Sierra Hyland scattered three hits Sunday afternoon, but the Cal Poly softball program stranded four of its six baserunners in falling to UC Davis during the finale of a three-game series at Bob Janssen Field, 1-0.
Hyland (12-5) retired eight of the first nine Aggies she faced before center fielder Brianna Warner singled with two down in the third. A passed ball committed by Mustang freshman catcher Makenna Young sent Warner to second before Aggie third baseman Alexis Carney provided UC Davis the 1-0 lead with a base hit up the middle.
Following the third, Hyland retired the final six Aggies she saw while sophomore righthander reliever Lindsey Chalmers was perfect during the final two innings of play.
Cal Poly's best chance to equalize came during the bottom of the fourth as Hyland reached base with a fielder's choice before senior first baseman Breana West drew a five-pitch. However, UC Davis starting righthander Justin Vela (1-5) struck out junior left fielder Courtney Tyler and junior second baseman Ashley Tornio to end the Mustang threat.
In the fifth, senior right fielder Betsy Colburn led off with a single. Young, however, lined out to Aggie first baseman Kelly Zboralske who doubled off Colburn.
Cal Poly (23-21, 6-9) once more saw its leadoff hitter reach to begin the sixth, but after sophomore third baseman Stephanie Heyward got to second through a sacrifice bunt from sophomore center fielder Amanda Sandoval, Vela forced a pop up from Hyland and inning-ending groundout from West.
Cal Poly hits the road for the final time during the regular season when visiting Hawai'i for a three-game, May 6-7 set. The series at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium opens with a 9 p.m. PT matchup on Friday, May 6.
