SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Lynn Leaupepe recorded her third consecutive double-double while leading a trio of Mustangs scoring in double-digits in Mott Athletics Center on Saturday night, but San Francisco rallied in the fourth quarter, edging the Cal Poly women's basketball team 73-67.
Leaupepe went 5-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line, finishing with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Her twin sister Dynn Leaupepe was next with 13 points, and senior forward Hannah Gilbert added 12 points and eight boards.
The back-and-forth game featured 16 lead changes (in addition to six ties), including four during the opening period, which USF ended ahead 17-13.
It was the second straight matchup between the two schools to be decided by fewer than 10 points, as the Dons avenged a 62-61 Mustang win in the Bay Area from 2015.
The Dons, WCC Tournament champions a year ago, led by as many as eight on the evening, going up 25-17 on a Nia Alexander jumper with 5:37 remaining to halftime.
Cal Poly scored the next six points, however, and then regained the lead at 29-28 on a layup by sophomore point guard Dye Stahley with 1:17 left in the half. A 3-pointer, though, by Anna Seilund put the Dons back in front 31-29 three seconds before the break.
The Mustangs took their largest lead of the game at 43-38 on a three-point play via a layup-plus-the-foul from Lynn Leaupepe with 4:26 remaining in the third quarter. USF responded to start the fourth up 52-51.
Cal Poly began the final period on another 6-0 run, as a steal-and-layup from Dynn Leaupepe provided a 57-52 advantage, before another five-point lead, 58-53, from a Stahley free throw with 7:50 to play.
USF (6-4) battled back once more, taking the lead for good at 63-62 on a Rachel Howard jumper with 1:09 left. The Dons went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line over the final 46 seconds to secure the road win.
Cal Poly (4-6) will continue non-conference play at Montana State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (PST) in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman.
