SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Justin Dhillon (above) notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season and the Cal Poly men's soccer program outshot CSUN 18-6 on Thursday evening, but the Mustangs opened a four-match home stand at Alex G. Spanos Stadium with a 1-1 draw versus the Matadors.
Junior goalkeeper Eric Kam faced just three shots on goal and finished with two saves for Cal Poly (2-6-2, 0-2-1), which picked up its first Big West Conference point of 2016 and stretched its unbeaten run at Spanos Stadium to 13 straight matches (Cal Poly has never lost at home under second-year head coach Steve Sampson).
The Mustangs kept CSUN to just two first-half shot attempts while repeatedly testing Matador goalkeeper Kevin Marquez at the other end of Spanos Stadium. Sophomore forward George Grote struck the Matador goalpost with a 16th-minute attempt before freshman midfielder Christian Enriquez was stopped by Marquez in the 22nd minute and sophomore defender Nick Carroll was turned away in the 27th.
Cal Poly eventually broke through on 38 minutes, with junior forward Adam Olsen streaking up the right flank before passing on to a racing Dhillon, who struck his 14th career goal past Marquez.
The Mustangs forced Marquez into four second-half saves, but failed to stretch their lead. CSUN (5-4-2, 2-0-1), meanwhile, equalized 16 minutes from regulation with defender Patrick Hickman finding midfielder Juan Samayoa for the latter's second goal of the year.
Cal Poly's best chance to snatch all three points in overtime came in the 108th minute, but junior forward Kaba Alkebulan saw his only attempt of the night stopped by Marquez.
Cal Poly continues its four-match home stand against UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
