SPOKANE, Wash. – Sophomore forward Kaba Alkebulan's 38th-minute goal stood as the decisive strike Saturday afternoon as the Cal Poly men's soccer team remained unbeaten in 2015 with a 1-0 triumph versus Seattle at Gonzaga's Luger Field.
A four-goal scorer for the Mustangs last year, Alkebulan collected a cross from senior midfielder Chase Minter before finding the back of the Seattle net from six yards away. Cal Poly's third different goalscorer of the season, Alkebulan also recorded his third career game-winning goal. Minter, already ranked second in program history for career assists, earned his 16th as a Mustang.
Mustang senior goalkeeper Wade Hamilton, in his 51st straight start, was forced into just one save for Cal Poly (2-0-1) – which defeated Seattle (2-2-0) for the first time in program history.
Cal Poly chalked up nine first-half shot attempts, but none on target until Alkebulan – brought on nine minutes prior – scored with his first attempt of the match.
Alkebulan forced Seattle goalkeeper Shane Haworth into a save just three minutes later and Hamilton wasn't forced into his lone save until turning away Redhawks midfielder Jeff Rose on 69 minutes.
Mustang junior forward Justin Dhillon hit the crossbar just two minutes later and, in another attempt to double Cal Poly's lead, senior midfielder Matt LaGrassa was stopped by Haworth seven-and-a-half minutes from full time.
Cal Poly has played 290 minutes this season and failed to trail at any point.
The Mustangs return home to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to host Air Force on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The match serves as Cal Poly's first Military Appreciation Night.
