Cal Poly Softball Team Walks Off with 1-0 Win versus Sacramento State

SAN LUIS OBISPO – A Sacramento State throwing error with the bases loaded on a ground ball from Cal Poly softball freshman shortstop Chelsea Convissar (right) contributed to the decisive run Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs prevailed in walk-off fashion for the second successive day by topping the Hornets in eight innings, 1-0.
In the circle during Cal Poly's lone Saturday game at the ShareSLO Mustang Classic, Mustang starting righthander Sierra Hyland (8-8) retired 15 of the first 16 hitters she faced and kept the hornets (7-10) hitless through the opening five innings. Sacramento State designated player Nicole Clark recorded her side's first hit with a single to lead off the sixth. Clark eventually reached third, but the Hornets advanced just one more baserunner into scoring position versus Hyland.
Cal Poly, meanwhile, stranded 11 baserunners on the afternoon – including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings.
Into the eighth and with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Sacramento State saw left fielder Alexa Chattleton single to lead off the inning and advance shortstop Paige Castro to third. Hyland, however, retired the next three Hornet batters to preserve the tie.
In the bottom half of the inning, Mustang senior left fielder Emily Ceccacci began on second before moving to third through sophomore right fielder Courtney Tyler's sacrifice bunt. Hyland then singled and stole second before freshman designated player Stephanie Heyward reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. The next Mustang, junior pinch hitter Betsy Colburn, hit into a fielder's choice that forced Ceccacci out at home. With two down, however, Convissar grounded to shortstop and Castro's low throw to first baseman Sasha Margulies was mishandled. The miscue allowed Hyland to score the winning run.
Hyland finished with four strikeouts for Cal Poly (10-14), which closes Mustang Classic action on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. versus Bryant.
