Hyland, Ceccacci Help Deliver Extra-Inning Victory versus Oregon State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore righthander Sierra Hyland (right) tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and senior left fielder Emily Ceccacci delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday as the Cal Poly softball program closed its portion of the Arizona State-hosted Kajikawa Classic with 1-0 victory against Oregon State.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to begin the eighth inning at Tempe Sports Complex, Hyland walked Oregon State shortstop McKenna Arriola to place two runners on base before retiring the next three Beavers to preserve the 0-0 stalemate.

In the bottom half of the eighth, Mustang sophomore Shawna McDonough came on as a pinch runner at second base before moving to third on freshman third baseman Alejandra Garcia's sacrifice bunt. Two pitches later, Ceccacci singled to score McDonough and hand Cal Poly its fourth extra-inning win in its last five games.

Hyland (3-0), who recorded her third double-digit strikeout game in three starts this season, retired 11 of the opening 12 batters she faced. Oregon State collected its only hit off Hyland when third baseman CJ Chirichigno produced a bunt single with two down in the fourth.

Cal Poly, meanwhile, advanced just one baserunner to third during the opening seven innings against Beaver starting righthander Bev Miller (3-1) with freshman pinch runner Alina Goodrum reaching third with one down in the third. Ceccacci, however, lined out and freshman shortstop Chelsea Convissar struck out to end the threat.

Sophomore righthander Courtney Tyler finished with a game-high two hits for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs (3-2) return to action at the Feb. 13-15 Stanford Nike Invitational. Cal Poly's portion of the draw begins on Friday versus Pacific at 10 a.m. and Stanford at 3 p.m.
