STANFORD – Freshman righthander Lindsey Chalmers (right) chalked up her first collegiate victory Friday morning and sophomore Sierra Hyland closed the Cal Poly softball team's shutout of Pacific with two innings of work as the Mustangs opened the Stanford Nike Invitational by dispatching the Tigers, 6-0. Cal Poly, however, conceded nine early runs to Stanford in game No. 2 of Friday's doubleheader and dropped a 10-2, five-inning decision to the Cardinal.
During Friday's opener against Pacific (2-5) at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium, Cal Poly did most of its offensive damage in the bottom of the first inning. After freshman shortstop Chelsea Convissar reached on a throwing error by Pacific shortstop Melanie Habib, Mustang center fielder Amanda Sandoval was hit by Pacific starting righthander Dani Bonnet (1-3). Mustang second baseman Ashley Tornio then swatted a two-run double down the right field line to provide the Mustangs the only runs they needed.
Still with one out, Cal Poly sophomore right fielder Courtney Tyler drew a walk ahead of Hyland, who doubled Cal Poly's lead with a double of her own to right center. First baseman Stephanie Heyward rounded off Cal Poly's inning by plating Hyland with a single to center field.
Chalmers (1-1), meanwhile, conceded solitary Pacific hits in the first, second and third innings and two in the fourth, but failed to allow a Tigers baserunner past second. She then retired Pacific in order in the fifth and finished with four strikeouts against zero walks before being lifted for Hyland to begin the sixth. Hyland conceded just one hit in two innings of relief work.
The Mustangs tacked on their final run in the sixth with senior left fielder Emily Ceccacci doubling with two down to score freshman pinch runner Alina Goodrum for the 6-0 finale.
Ceccacci finished with a game-high two hits for Cal Poly versus Pacific.
During Friday's second game versus Stanford (5-2), Hyland (3-1) retired the side in the first before the Cardinal scored nine runs in the second highlighted by a two-run double by catcher Jessica Plaza, a two-run base hit from first baseman Kayla Bonstrom and a pair of bases-loaded walks and a wild pitch by Hyland.
Cal Poly struck back for its two runs in the top of third with a two-out double by Sandoval moving Tornio into scoring position. Hyland then delivered a two-run single to cut into Stanford's advantage.
The Mustangs, who stranded eight baserunners against Stanford, moved runners into scoring position in the fourth and fifth, but were unable to claim more runs.
Stanford finalized the scoring in the bottom of the fifth and produced the run-rule victory with second baseman Lauren Bertoy singling with two down to score pinch runner Alyssa Lombardo.
Cal Poly continues Stanford Nike Invitational action on Saturday, Feb. 13 versus No. 3 Alabama (10 a.m.) and Pacific (3 p.m.).
