SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's basketball team broke the all-time school record for rebounds in a single game Tuesday night while routing Sacramento State 97-72 to conclude non-conference play in Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs, who had three players produce double-figure efforts on the boards, secured a combined 74 rebounds on the evening, surpassing the previous program mark of 67 (from a 74-57 win at UC Davis on Dec. 15, 1979).
Hannah Gilbert led the way with 23 points and 17 rebounds, both career highs for the junior forward. She was 10-for-18 and added two blocks while earning her fifth double-double this year.
Meanwhile, sophomore guard Dynn Leaupepe was also a high scorer, coming off the bench to provide 23 points and 10 rebounds (also each season-best totals).
Additionally, junior forward Amanda Lovely chipped in six points and a career-high 13 boards, and sophomore guard Lynn Leaupepe added 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Mustangs (7-6) combined to distribute a season-high 26 assists (via nine passers) on the way to shooting 40-for-77 overall (equating to a .519 rate, another top performance for 2015-16.)
Their offensive output was nine points off the school record for a regulation game and represents the highest figure since a 107-102 overtime victory at Long Beach State on Jan. 18, 2014.
The Hornets (3-8), who came into the game leading the country in 3-point attempts (averaging 42.9, nearly 17 back of Tuesday's 9-for-60), were held to 21-for-96 shooting altogether (.219), Cal Poly's stingiest allowance of the season in terms of field-goal percentage defense.
Cal Poly's largest lead of the game (35) came at 79-44 with 7:12 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs will now begin the Big West Conference portion of their schedule by visiting UC Santa Barbara, as they'll look for a 10th consecutive win in the Blue-Green Rivalry when taking the Events Center Thunderdome court at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
