SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman righthander Sierra Hyland struck out 15 hitters over 11 and one-third innings of work and two appearances on Saturday and homered alongside senior catcher Mariah Cochiolo (right) as the Cal Poly softball program swept a doubleheader for the second successive day at the Mustang Classic with the team topping Stony Brook (3-1) and Sacramento State (6-1).
The complete results and schedule from the 2014 Mustang Classic are below.
During Saturday's opening victory against Stony Brook (3-9) inside Bob Janssen Field, Cal Poly erased Seawolves first baseman Melissa Phelan's run-scoring double in the top of the first during the bottom of the second as Cochiolo doubled to left field to score senior second baseman Ashley Romano.
Cal Poly then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third as a Romano sacrifice fly scored junior left fielder Emily Ceccacci.
Limited to just one hit between the fourth and fifth innings, Cal Poly snatched an insurance run in the sixth as Cochiolo belted her third home run of 2014 to left center field.
After taking over for starting lefthander Chloe Wurst with two outs in the third, Hyland (8-3) struck out four Seawolves and allowed just one walk the remaining of the game.
During Saturday's second game against Sacramento State (8-8), Cal Poly notched all of the offense it required in the top of the first with Hyland following senior designated player Jillian Andersen's one-out walk with her third homer of the year.
After Andersen added a third run in the top of the second by singling to plate freshman right fielder Courtney Tyler, Ceccacci placed the Mustangs up 4-0 in the fourth with a run-scoring base hit that plated Cochiolo.
Cal Poly capped its scoring in the seventh with Hyland doubling home Andersen and a groundout from sophomore first baseman Breana West bringing in Ceccacci.
Held to four hits during the first six innings, Sacramento State scratched across its only run of the day in the bottom of the seventh. Hyland still finished with 11 strikeouts – the second-highest total of her Mustang career.
