SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman righthander Sierra Hyland matched a career high with 12 strikeouts during the Cal Poly softball team's Sunday opening-game victory against Santa Clara (3-2) and sophomore first baseman Breana West's (right) three-run homer helped the Mustangs to a nightcap triumph versus Sacramento State (6-2) as the program swept its Sunday doubleheader at the Mustang Classic.
The complete results from the 2014 Mustang Classic are below.
During Sunday's opening victory against Santa Clara (3-14) at Bob Janssen Field, Hyland (10-3) allowed just three Bronco hits and one walk while throwing 77 percent of her 112 pitches for strikes. Hyland's 12 strikeouts match a career-high total set during a Feb. 22 no-hitter versus Maryland.
Cal Poly (13-9) opened its scoring versus the Broncos in the second inning with senior shortstop Kim Westlund doubling down the left field line to plate senior first baseman Shea Williams.
Offensively, Hyland aided herself during the bottom of the fifth by producing a fielder's choice that scored Westlund for a 2-0 Mustang advantage.
Held to one hit through the opening six innings, Santa Clara deadlocked the game in the top of the seventh through a two-out single up the middle from third baseman Jordan Newell that scored pinch runner Sarah Mosher and right fielder Krista Jensen.
Cal Poly, however, put itself in position to win the matchup in the bottom of the seventh. After two quick outs, senior left fielder Emily Ceccacci singled, Hyland was intentionally walked and Romano produced a hit to load the bases. Sacramento State reliever Ciara Gonzales then hit Mustang senior catcher Mariah Cochiolo with a pitch to force home Ceccacci and hand Cal Poly victory.
During Sunday's second victory against Sacramento State (9-9), Cal Poly erased a run-scoring hit from Hornet first baseman Sasha Margulies in the bottom of the first as Ceccacci singled to bring home senior center fielder Lauren Moreno.
Held to a hit in the second, Cal Poly exploded for four runs in the third as Hyland doubled to score Ceccacci before West belted her second homer of the year to left center field to plate Romano and senior right fielder Cami Brown.
Staked to the four-run lead, Hyland was threatened just once more in the fifth as Sacramento State loaded the bases with no outs. Hyland, however, produced a pop-out double play from catcher Paris Prado before forcing third baseman Alexis Martinez to fly out.
After Sacramento State added a run in the top of the sixth, Cal Poly finalized the 6-2 scoreline in the bottom half of the inning as senior third baseman Jillian Andersen brought in freshman right fielder Courtney Tyler with a base hit.
Cal Poly continues action at the March 14-16 Fresno State Classic. The Mustangs get their portion of the tournament underway on Friday, March 14 against Colorado State (9 a.m.) and Ohio State (1:30 p.m.).
