SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Righthander Sierra Hyland continued her impressive freshman season on Friday afternoon at the Cal Poly softball program's eighth annual Mustang Classic by throwing successive one-hit shutouts as the hosts swept past Stony Brook (7-0) and Fairleigh Dickinson (6-0) at Bob Janssen Field.
The complete results and schedule from the 2014 Mustang Classic are below.
During Friday's second game against Fairleigh Dickinson (3-3), Hyland (6-3) retired the first 10 Knights she faced and carried a no-hitter through six and one-third innings. Fairleigh Dickinson first baseman Bryana Dorado broke up the no-hit bid with a single, but Hyland finished with six strikeouts against just one walk in the complete-game triumph.
Offensively, Cal Poly found the winning runs in the fourth inning. With two Mustangs in scoring position and one down, Hyland helped her own cause with a single down the left field line to score senior center fielder Lauren Moreno. The next Mustang, sophomore first baseman Breana West, grounded out to plate senior designated player Jillian Andersen for a 2-0 advantage.
Cal Poly tacked on two more runs in the fifth through a run-scoring single from freshman third baseman Ashley Tornio and an RBI-double by Moreno.
The Mustangs, who received three hits from Moreno, added two additional runs in the sixth to cement victory.
During Friday's opener versus Stony Brook (4-8), Hyland struck out nine Seawolves – a feat matching the second highest total of her career – and yielded just a fourth-inning bunt single to third baseman Olivia Mintun in the win. Hyland also conceded just one walk to Stony Brook.
At the plate, Cal Poly pushed across four runs in the third to break the scoreless deadlock. With Moreno on third and Andersen on second to open the bottom half of the inning, junior left fielder Emily Ceccacci lashed a bases-clearing triple. Hyland followed with a double to left center to score Ceccacci before, two batters later, senior second baseman Ashley Romano produced a sacrifice fly to plate senior Mariah Cochiolo, who was on to pinch run for Hyland.
Run-scoring singles from Ceccacci and Hyland pushed Cal Poly's advantage to 6-0 in the fourth. Ceccacci then rounded off her career-high four RBI day in the sixth with a one-out single to score Moreno.
Cal Poly resumes Mustang Classic action on Saturday, March 8 with a 2 p.m. doubleheader versus Stony Brook and Sacramento State.
