CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Freshman righthander Sierra Hyland (right) matched a career high with eight strikeouts and belted a two-run homer, but the Cal Poly softball team failed to recover from an early deficit against Syracuse and dropped a 3-2 decision on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

At the Big League Dreams Sports Park, Syracuse (4-3) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning through a one-out sacrifice fly from left fielder Riley Johnson. Syracuse then doubled its lead in the third as catcher Nicole Lundstrom produced a run-scoring single to right field.

Hyland allowed five of Syracuse's six hits during the first three innings before retiring four of the next five Orange. A solo homer from second baseman Julie Wambold with one down in the fifth counted as Syracuse's last hit of the game.

Out of the opposite dugout, Cal Poly squandered senior center fielder Lauren Moreno's leadoff double in the third by stranding three baserunners. Overall, the Mustangs advanced just two baserunners past second until the sixth, when freshman designated player Courtney Tyler drew a full-count walk to lead off the bottom of the inning before Hyland swatted her second career homer to left field.

Hyland retired Syracuse in order in the bottom of the sixth, but Cal Poly was retired similarly in the top of the seventh to end the matchup.

Cal Poly (5-8) continues tournament action on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. against Maryland.
