CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – In just her fifth career start, Cal Poly freshman righthander Sierra Hyland tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts against Maryland as the Cal Poly softball program produced a 4-0 victory on Saturday evening at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Despite walking five Terrapins, Hyland (3-3) allowed just one Maryland batter past second base. Hyland, who retired eight of the final nine hitters she faced, struck out the side in the fourth in becoming the first Mustang to record a no-hitter since Anna Cahn (2008-11) blanked Utah State on March 7, 2009.
Offensively, the Mustangs found the only run they needed in the second as senior second baseman Ashley Romano's two-out infield single scored senior shortstop Kim Westlund.
Cal Poly padded its lead in the fourth as senior center fielder Lauren Moreno singled into right to plate freshmen Taylor Yzaguirre and Ashley Tornio. The Mustangs finalized their scoring in the fifth with Tornio – appearing at third base – producing a sacrifice fly to score sophomore designated player Betsy Colburn.
Cal Poly wraps Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic action on Sunday, Feb. 23 against New Mexico (11:30 a.m.) and UNLV (2 p.m.).
