STANFORD, Calif. – In just her third career start, freshman righthander Sierra Hyland tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout and struck out six Bradley batters on Sunday morning as the Cal Poly softball program closed the Stanford Nike Invitational with a 3-0 triumph versus the Braves.
Held to two hits through the opening five innings by Bradley starting lefthander Jaelen Hull (1-4), the Mustangs found the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior left fielder Emily Ceccacci led off Cal Poly's half of the inning with a single before stealing second and advancing to third through a bunt single from senior shortstop Kim Westlund. Sophomore designated player Betsy Colburn then tripled to provide the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Up next, Hyland followed with a base hit to bring home Colburn and finalize the scoring.
In the circle, Hyland allowed just one Braves baserunner during the first two innings and conceded the only Bradley hit to designated player Mariah Cole to lead off the third. Hyland retired 12 of the next 13 hitters she faced with only two Bradley baserunners reaching second all day.
Cal Poly (4-6) continues its five-tournament, pre-Big West Conference run at the Feb. 20-23 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Mustangs open their portion of the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 20 versus No. 15 Texas (1 p.m.) and Fordham (8 p.m.).
