Mustangs Swept by Pacific, No. 17 Cardinal at Stanford Nike Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior center fielder Lauren Moreno (right) collected a game-high three hits and provided the Cal Poly softball team an early lead with a two-run single, but a seven-run second inning from Pacific sent the Mustangs to an 8-3 loss during Saturday's opening game at the Stanford Nike Invitational. Cal Poly also fell in its nightcap matchup versus No. 17 Stanford, 6-2.

During Saturday's opening game against Pacific, Cal Poly (3-6) struck for the opening run in the top of the first inning. Moreno led off the matchup with a single before reaching second base on a sacrifice bunt from junior left fielder Emily Ceccacci. After taking third on a wild pitch, Moreno put Cal Poly up 1-0 after senior shortstop Kim Westlund mustered a sacrifice fly.

The Mustangs then stretched their lead to 3-0 in the second when Moreno lashed a two-out base hit into center field to plate senior right fielder Cami Brown and senior catcher Shea Williams.

However, the Tigers – who fell to Cal Poly on Friday 7-4 – put the game out of reach with a seven-run second that included three Mustangs errors and was highlighted by a grand slam from center fielder Megan Foglesong. The senior also contributed to Pacific's final run in the bottom of the sixth with a run-scoring double.

In circle, Mustang junior lefthander Chloe Wurst (3-4) suffered the loss despite conceding just one earned run. Freshman righthander Sierra Hyland struck out three Tigers in four and two-thirds innings of relief work.

During Saturday's closing game versus Stanford (10-0), Hyland (0-2) held the Cardinal hitless over the first two innings before allowing four runs in the third, an effort spotlighted by center fielder Cassandra Roulund's two-run double.

Stanford then finalized its scoring in the fourth with shortstop Kylie Sorenson producing a two-run double down the right field line for a 6-0 lead.

Cal Poly cut into Stanford's edge in the top of the fifth as Ceccacci tripled to plate Moreno before Westlund collected another sacrifice fly RBI by scoring Ceccacci.

The Mustangs outhit Stanford, 7-6.
