
Jonae Ervin Scores Career-High in Overtime Win at Hawai'i

Honolulu, O'ahu – Senior Jonae Ervin scored a career-high 37 points in leading the Mustangs in a come from behind win in overtime to defeat Hawai'i, 78-74, in both teams Big West Conference opener on Wednesday in Honolulu.
With the win the Mustangs improve to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in Big West play while Hawai'i falls to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Cal Poly opens the home conference season on Saturday when they host Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara at 4 pm.
Cal Poly came back after trailing by 17 points in the first half and needed a putback by Taryn Garza at the buzzer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Five points by Ervin in the extra period put the game away.
Ervin scored her career-high 37 points when she connected on 12 of 25 shots from the floor, two of three long range and 11 of 16 from the line. She made it a double-double when she tied her career-high when she grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Her 37 points surpassed her previous high of 33 points against Oregon in 2011.
Junior Ariana Elegado added 15 points while the team's leading scorer, senior Molly Schlemer, scored 10 points. Garza scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds in a starting role while Schlemer also nabbed nine boards in the game.
Sydney Haydel led Hawai'i with 18 points with Kamilah Jackson adding 17 points. Ashleigh Karaitiana came off the bench to score 15 points.
Cal Poly shot 39 percent from the floor and made four of 15 from long range while UH shot 33 percent from the floor and made six of 20 from beyond the arc. The Mustangs made 18 of 28 from the line while UH made 22 of 34. UH held a 52-46 advantage in rebounds.
Cal Poly used a 6-0 run to hold an 8-5 lead with 15:50 on the clock thanks to a jumper and layup by Amaka Ofodu. UH went on its own run, 16-4, over the next three minutes and held a 21-12 lead at 12:14 left in the half. At the midway point of the period, UH held a 27-13 lead. UH held its largest lead of the half, 17 points (37-20), with 4:24 on the clock. Cal Poly closed the half on an 8-0 run and UH had to settle for a 37-28 lead at the break. Cal Poly shot 38 percent from the floor while UH shot 33 percent. The Mustangs went to the line five times and made three while UH went to the line 20 times and made 15.
The Mustangs opened the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to three (37-34) forcing a UH timeout with 17:52 on the clock. UH responded with a 6-0 run of its own to build a nine point lead (43-34) with 14:34 left in the game. With 11:39 on the clock, UH's lead was down to five, 48-43, and maintained a 55-50 lead at 6:53.
UH held its five point lead, 59-54, with Cal Poly calling timeout with 4:20 left in the game. Ervin made a pair of free throws to cut the lead to three (3:43), but a three by Haydel on the next possession put UH up six. Elegado connected on a pair of free throws with 1:49 on the clock and two free throws by Ervin (1:06) cutting the lead to two, 62-60.
After a missed jumper by Ervin (:29), Cal Poly called timeout with 21 seconds on the clock. UH made two of four free throws to go up by four, 64-60, with 11 seconds left in the game. Ervin made a layup with five seconds on the clock to put the Mustangs within two. After a foul by UH's Destiny King, Cal Poly called timeout. Out of the break, Ervin missed the front end of a one and one, but Elegado grabbed the rebound and took a jumper with two seconds left with Garza grabbing the rebound and tipping the ball in at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, a jumper by Elegado put Cal Poly up four (73-69) with 2:01 left in the extra period. UH hit a three, but Ervin came right back to connect on a jumper to put the Mustangs up three (75-72). After a free throw by Garza, UH took a timeout with 38 seconds left in overtime. Elegado had the opportunity to put away the game but missed a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left. Ervin went to the line and made one of two giving the Mustangs a five point lead with 15 seconds left. UH came right back and made a layup cutting the lead to three, but Ervin made one of two at the line to put away the game, 78-74.
