SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly softball team twice found itself trailing after the first inning on Friday afternoon at its own Mustang Classic tournament, but Cal Poly successfully overturned both deficits, topping Rutgers 3-2 and Northern Illinois 6-3 at Bob Janssen Field.
Complete results from all of Friday's games at the Mustang Classic are below.
During Friday's opening game against Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights (6-6) found their only runs during the top of the first as third baseman Ashley Alden swatted a two-run homer over the center field fence.
The Mustangs (7-14-1) left two runners on during their half of the first before halving the Scarlett Knight lead in the second. After freshman first baseman Breana West led off the inning with a single, pinch runner Jessie Hinojosa reached second through a sacrifice bunt from senior center field Whitley Gerhart before scoring on junior right fielder Cami Brown's single to left center.
Mustang starting lefthander Chloe Wurst (4-5-1), who matched a career high with seven strikeouts, stranded two Rutgers runners in the third before retiring the Scarlet Knights in order during the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
After leaving two more runners on during the third, Cal Poly notched the decisive runs in the fourth. With two out, junior designated player Celina Lafrades (above) singled down the right field line to plate junior second baseman Ashley Romano and advance junior third baseman Jillian Andersen to third. Lafrades took off for second on the ensuing pitch and a throwing error by Rutgers catcher Kaci Madden allowed Andersen to notch the winning run.
During Friday's nightcap against Northern Illinois (6-9), Mustang starting righthander Jordan Yates conceded a three-run first inning that was highlighted by Huskies designated player Erika Oswald's two-out, two-run double.
Cal Poly threatened during each of the opening three innings, including the second, when the Mustangs stranded the bases loaded. The Mustangs, however, eventually broke through in the fourth as junior left fielder Lauren Moreno tripled to plate junior pinch runner Jessie Hinojosa before scoring herself on the throw from the outfield.
Still trailing 3-2 into the sixth, Cal Poly notched four decisive runs with Lafrades putting the game out of Northern Illinois' reach with a two-out, two-run single.
