SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly softball program mustered just seven total hits on Saturday afternoon at its own Mustang Classic tournament in dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Nevada (5-2) and Sacramento State (2-0) at Bob Janssen Field.
Complete results from all of Saturday's games at the Mustang Classic are below.
During Cal Poly's Saturday opening matchup against Nevada (12-12), the Wolf Pack grabbed the game's opening lead in the fourth through a two-out, two-run homer from first baseman Lauren Lastrapes.
Held without a hit during the opening four innings, Cal Poly broke through during the fifth against Wolf Pack starting righthander Ariel Craig (1-0) as junior catcher Mariah Cochiolo scored on a throwing error committed by Nevada right fielder Megan Fincher after junior Whitley Gerhart had singled.
Nevada second baseman Karley Hopkins drew a bases-loaded walk during the top of the sixth to increase the Wolf Pack advantage to 3-1. The Mustangs, however, again inched one run closer during the bottom half of the inning as junior shortstop Kim Westlund doubled to center field to score junior second baseman Ashley Romano.
The Wolf Pack, however, put the game out of reach during the top of the seventh as third baseman Jasmine Jenkins produced an RBI-double before Lastrapes manufactured a run-scoring single. Cal Poly was retired in order by Craig during the bottom of the seventh.
Mustang starting lefthander Chloe Wurst (4-6-1) suffered the loss after striking out four while scattering six hits.
During Saturday's nightcap against Sacramento State (11-5), the Hornets notched the only runs they required during the fourth and sixth innings through run-scoring singles from left fielder Alexa Chattleton.
Cal Poly, limited to just one hit from junior left fielder Lauren Moreno (above) during the opening six innings, failed to advance a runner past second against Sacramento State starting righthander Caitlin Brooks (7-1). Cal Poly's best chance to break through occurred during the seventh, as Moreno singled with two outs before moving to second on junior designated player Cami Brown's walk. Romano, however, struck out to end the game.
Cal Poly (7-16-1) concludes Mustang Classic action on Sunday, March 10 versus Northern Illinois at 11 a.m. and Sacramento State at 1 p.m.
