
Cal Poly Wins Fifth-Straight, Defeats CS Fullerton, 72-47

With the win the Mustangs improve to 12-4 in conference games and 18-9 overall while Cal State Fullerton falls to 5-11 and 9-19 overall.
Junior Molly Schlemer paced the Mustangs with her 19th game of the season scoring in double figures with 16 points and 11 rebounds. It was the sixth double-double of the season for the junior. Schlemer has scored in double figures 14 times in the last 15 games. Schlemer's points came when she hit seven of 11 shots from the floor including both free throws.
Sophomore Ariana Elegado added 11 points when she connected on three 3-pointers. Senior Kayla Griffin added nine points with Amaka Ofodu scoring a career-high eight points in only her second start as a Mustang. Junior Jonae Ervin and senior Ashley Cascio, both off the bench, scored eight and six points respectively.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Chante Miles with 14 points with Alex Thomas adding 10 points in the loss.
The Mustangs shot 48 percent from the floor and made eight of 15 shots from long range while CSF shot a meager 29 percent from the floor and just three of 15 from beyond the arc. Cal Poly held a 42-30 advantage in rebounds while turning the ball over 14 times. Cal Poly dished out 18 assists compared to the Titans, eight.
In a wild first half that saw the Mustangs up four, 12-8, on a field goal by Schlemer five minutes into the game. CSF came back to tie the game only to have the Mustangs respond with a 16-12 lead on a jumper by Griffin with 11:50 on the clock.
CSF mounted a comeback and held a 21-18 lead on a layup by Miles with 6:06 left in the half. The Titans held a six point lead, 29-13, with under three minutes to play when Cascio hit a pair of three-pointers and Ervin made a layup off a steal at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 33-32 lead at the break.
In the half the Mustangs were led by Schlemer's eight points with Cascio and Ofodu each adding six points.
The second half opened as the first with CSF scoring and taking the lead on its first possession. Cal Poly came back at took the lead, 43-39, on a three by Elegado and Schlemer added a layup to give Cal Poly a 45-39 lead, forcing a CSF timeout with 15:04 left in the game.
Cal Poly made it a nine point game, 50-41, when Griffin connected on a three with 11:58 left in the period and made it a 10 point lead on an Elegado three at the 10 minute mark.
Nikol Allison converted a layup for a 61-44 Cal Poly lead with 6:05 on the clock and made it a 21 point game, 65-44, when Schlemer made a layup with 3:33 left in the game. Cal Poly cruised to a 72-47 win.
