
Women's Basketball Improves to 4-4 with 76-65 Win over San Francisco

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball team had 32 points scored from the bench while senior Molly Schlemer recorded her fifth double-double of the season in leading the team to a, 76-65, win over the University of San Francisco on Saturday in the final day of the Holiday Beach Classic.
With the win the Mustangs even their record at 4-4 while USF falls to 2-4. Cal Poly completed the four team tournament with a 2-0 record after defeating Akron, 84-74, on Friday. In Saturday's first game, UC Davis defeated Akron 71-58.
Schlemer hit nine of 12 shots from the floor and made three of five from the line in scoring her team-high 21 points. She added a team-high 10 rebounds with four coming at the offensive end. Junior Ariana Elegado added 15 points while senior Jonae Ervin scored eight in accounting for the scoring from the starters.
Junior Kristen Ale led the group off the bench with 12 points while sophomore Beth Balbierz scored 11 when she made three of six from long range. Freshman Hannah Gilbert scored seven points while Maddison Allen scored two.
USF was led by freshman Rachel Howard's 18 points with Taylor Proctor adding 12.
Cal Poly shot 39 percent from the floor and made six of 20 from long range. The Mustangs connected on 12 of 16 from the line.
USF shot 36 percent from the floor, but made just three of 16 from beyond the arc. The Dons went to the line 23 times and converted 14.
Cal Poly remained dominate on the boards, outrebounding USF, 52-42. Cal Poly dished out 17 assists while turning the ball over 14 times. USF had seven assists with 11 turnovers.
Cal Poly moved out to a five point lead (8-3) four minutes into the game. USF responded with an 11-0 run had held a 14-8 lead with 12:55 on the clock. Cal Poly came right back with a 14-2 run of its own to over the next four minutes to hold a 22-16 advantage and a lead it would never relinquish.
The Mustangs held their largest lead of the half, 34-25, on a jumper by Ervin with 2:59 left in the half. Cal Poly would settle for a 36-30 lead at the break.
The second half had the Mustangs open an eight point lead (46-38) on a layup by Schlemer 14:15 left in the game, but USF would battle back and close the gap to one, 56-55, with 8:51 on the clock.
Cal Poly would go on a 12-3 run to open the lead to 10 points at 4:25 on a three by Elegado and hold its largest lead of the game, 74-60, on a pair of free throws by Schlemer with 1:51 on the clock.
