
Cal Poly to Host New Mexico State in Home Opener, Monday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly women's basketball program opens the 2013-14 home season tonight when New Mexico State comes to visit at Mott Athletics Center for a 7 pm game. Cal Poly enters the game 0-3 while New Mexico State enters the game with a 1-2 record.
Following tonight's game, the Mustangs will remain at home and host Nevada on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 pm. Cal Poly will return to the road to visit Saint Mary's, who has been receiving votes in the latest USAToday/Coaches poll, on Nov. 23 for a 1 pm game. Cal Poly will return home to host the Cal Poly Holiday Beach Classic when the Mustangs will take on Akron at 7 pm on Nov. 29. That game will be preceded by University of San Francisco taking on UC Davis at 5 pm. On Nov. 30, UC Davis will take on Akron at 5 pm, followed by Cal Poly hosting the University of San Francisco at 7 pm.
The Aggies enter the week 1-2 after opening the season with a 94-69 loss on the road to UTEP, defeating Boise State (98-68) and falling to Loyola Marymount (81-64) on Saturday. The Aggies are led by Vanessa Garner's 19.7 points per game and is followed by Abby Scott and Tyler Ellis averaging 13.0 and 11.0 points per game respectively.
The Mustangs have opened the 2013-14 season 0-3 after playing No. 5 Stanford on Nov. 15. In the game with Stanford, the Mustangs held the lead mid-way through the first half when the Cardinal turned it up a notch and pulled away. Senior Molly Schlemer recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Jonae Ervin had a solid all-around game with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Junior Ariana Elegado was the third Mustang in double figures with 13 points.
Overall, Ervin leads the team with 18.7 points per game with Elegado adding 15.0 and Shlemer 14.0 points per game. Schlemer is the team's top rebounder with 11.3 boards followed by redshirt freshman Maddison Allen and Ervin each adding 5.0 rebounds per game. Of Allen's 15 rebounds this season, 10 have come at the offensive end of the court. Ervin dishes out 4.0 assists per game. Cal Poly as a team is converting 34 percent of its shots from the floor and has made 25 percent from long range.
