
Hawai'i Defeats Cal Poly Women's Basketball, 61-43

HONOLULU, HI – The Hawai'i women's basketball team defeated Cal Poly, 61-43, using a hot first half and never looking back. With the win Hawai'i improves to 9-9 overall and 5-2 in conference games while the Mustangs fall to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in Big West games.
Cal Poly will return to action on Saturday when the team travels to Cal State Northridge for a game at 4 pm.
Hawai'i shot 55 percent in the first half and 43 percent for the game while the Mustangs shot 28 percent from the floor and made just one of eight from long range. Cal Poly turned the ball over 16 times with UH committing only 12 turnovers. The Mustangs held a 40-39 advantage in rebounds and went to the line 15 times, making 10. UH went to the line eight times and made seven shots.
Junior Molly Schlemer led the Mustangs with 15 points when she made six of 14 shots from the floor. Ariana Elegado had nine points with Nikol Allison contributing five points off the bench. Kayla Griffin grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Mustangs.
UH was led by Ashleigh Karaitiana with 17 points with Kamilah Martin adding 14 points.
After the Mustangs opened the game with two free throws, Hawai'i went on a run and held a 21-4 lead with 11:24 in the half and held a 30-10 lead with 8:14 left in the half. With 4:50 on the clock the Mustangs had cut the lead to 12, 32-20, on a 10-2 run. Hawai'i settled for a 39-24 lead at the break with the team shooting 55 percent from the floor and the Mustangs limited to 32 percent.
In the opening minutes of the final period, Cal Poly cut the lead to 11, 41-30, opening the half on a 7-2 run, but the Mustangs would get no closer as Hawai'i extended its lead to 23 points with 5:41 left in the game. Cal Poly would get no closer than 16 points with Hawai'i winning 61-43.
