
Conference Leading Mustangs Head to Hawai'i, CS Northridge

This Week: The Mustangs find themselves in a tie for first place in the Big West Conference with a 4-1 record and will take on a pair of schools, half a game behind, with a 4-2 records this week; Hawai'i and Cal State Northridge. Cal Poly will travel to Hawai'i for a game on Thursday, Jan. 24 with tip set for 9 pm (PT), then return to the mainland to take on Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 4 pm.

What's coming up: Following the Cal State Northridge game, Cal Poly will come home to host Cal State Fullerton (Jan. 31) and UC Riverside (Feb. 2). The CSF game is scheduled to tip at 7 pm while the UCR game will tip at 4 pm.

Hawai'i: Hawai'i enters the game with the Mustangs with an 8-9 overall record and 4-2 mark in conference games and one half game out of first place. Kamilah Martin leads the team with 16.1 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game. She converts 51 percent of her shots from the floor. She is followed in scoring by Ashleigh with 9.4 points and Shawna-Lei Kuehu with 6.9 points. Monica DeAngelis is the team leader in assists with 39. UH conference losses have come against Cal State Fullerton (83-74) to open the conference season and Pacific (71-61) on Jan. 17. Both games were on the road.
History with Hawai'i: Cal Poly and Hawai'i have met only three times in the schools history with Hawai'i winning all three. The teams first met in 1978 and not played since 1982.
A Little more History with Hawai'i: Former Cal Poly football standout Stan Sheriff was Cal Poly's starting center all four years (1950-53), leading the Mustangs to the California Collegiate Athletic Association title with a 9-0 overall mark. Following his senior season, Sheriff was named CCAA most valuable player, first-team All-CCAA, first-team Little All-Coast, first-team Little All-American, honorable mention National NCAA All-American and played in both the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1954 and played for the National Football League's Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns from 1954-57. Sheriff was a successful teacher, coach and administrator at the University of Northern Iowa from 1958-83 and the University of Hawaii from 1983-93. At Northern Iowa, he was both athletics director and head football coach, compiling a 129-101-4 record with six conference titles, 15 winning seasons, four bowl appearances and twice was named Coach of the Year. Sheriff was director of athletics at Hawaii from 1983-93 and passed away in January 1993. He is a member of the Cal Poly, Hawaii and Northern Iowa athletics halls of fame. Sheriff was posthumously inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame on May 15, 2010. He also was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995. The field in the UNIDOME at the University of Northern Iowa is named Sheriff Field and the 10,300-seat arena at the University of Hawaii is named Stan Sheriff Center.
Cal State Northridge: Hawai'i enters the week with a 10-7 overall record and 4-2 mark in conference games and will host UCSB prior to the game with the Mustangs. The Matadors have a pair of players averaging better then 13 points per game led by Ashlee Guay with 13.5 points. Marta Masoni is the second player and she checks in with 13.4 points. Camille Mahlknecht is the team's top rebounder with 8.5 boards per game. CSUN opened the conference season with four wins, but have lost the last two outings falling to UC Davis (61-46) and Pacific (60-51).
History with the Matadors: Cal State Northridge holds a 34-31 advantage over the Mustangs in the all-time series. Last season the teams split the season series with each team winning on its home court.
A Little About the Mustangs.....:
• The Mustangs are coming off back-to-back Big West Regular Season Championships posting a 12-4 conference record both seasons.
• The Mustangs won 17 games last season, one off pervious year (18) that tied for second-best in school history since making the move to Division I in the 1994-95 season. Cal Poly posted a Division I best 21 wins during the 2008-09 season when the team went 21-11. During the 2009-10 season, head coach Faith Mimnaugh's squad recorded 18 wins... Overall in women's basketball history (since 1974-75), the team posted a 21-12 record in the 1981-82 season and 18-11 in 1979-80 when the team was competing at the Division II level.
• The Mustangs have claimed the last three Big West Conference Player of the year awards with Kristina Santiago winning twice (2011-12 and 2009-10) and Rachel Clancy winning in 2010-11.
• The Mustangs have advanced to the post season the last two seasons, both in the WNIT. In 2011 the Mustangs hosted California and lost 74-60 while in the 2012 season Cal Poly traveled to Seattle and lost to Washington, 90-71.
• Cal Poly head coach Faith Mimnaugh picked up her 200 career win at Cal Poly with the team's 72-63 win at Nevada. She is already has the most wins as a coach in program history, amassing 204 wins to this point in 15-plus seasons.

Ervin, Back Where She Belongs....: Junior Jonae Ervin is back where she belongs.... Among the leaders in the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio.... For the first time this season she has played enough games to qualify for the NCAA ranking and she steps in at No. 7 in the nation at 2.79 per game.... Last season she led the nation with a ratio of 2.67.
An Assists or Two...: The Mustangs are ranked 23rd in the nation and lead the Big West Conference with 16.6 assists per game. Four players have dished out more then 30 assists this season, led by Kayla Griffin with 56. Jonae Ervin has 53 with Ariana Elegado with 49. Caroline Reeves has dished out 43. Ervin has amassed her total in just 12 games.
Playing the Best... : Cal Poly opened the 2012-13 season playing two teams ranked in the top 25. The Mustangs opened the season with No. 24 Oklahoma State, falling 90-59. Then came back after a pair of wins to play No. 12 California (87-61). .. The are now No. 11 and No. 7 respectively...
RPI.... : . The Mustangs are ranked 96th this week in the NCAA RPI... ... An improvement from last week at 104.. and the previous week at 122nd... Other Big West schools in the RPI a head of Cal Poly are Pacific at #23 and Cal State Northridge #62...
Griffin Getting it Going..... : Senior Kayla Griffin had her best game of the season and possibly her career in the game with UC Santa Barbara when she connected for a career-best 21 points when she hit eight of 15 shots from the floor and three of four from long range... Her all around game included five assists and four steals without committing a turnover... For the season Griffin is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.5 points per game and leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.
Schlemer's Career Night: Junior Molly Schlemer, who established a career high in scoring in Cal Poly's historic triple-overtime win over Pacific, was named the Big West Player of the Week. Schlemer averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds in two Big West Conference games at home last week. In the 73-71 win over UC Davis on Thursday, Schlemer came off the bench to spark Cal Poly with 12 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes of play when she hit five of seven shots from the floor. Two days later, Schlemer scored a career-high 28 points when she converted 13 of 17 shots from the floor as Cal Poly beat Pacific 96-95 in the Mustangs' first-ever triple-overtime game. She backed up her career night with a 22 point game against UCSB when she made 11 of 15 shots from the floor with eight rebounds.. In the five Big West Conference games, Schlemer leads the team with 14.8 points per game with a team-high 7.0 rebounds.
Elegado Shines: Sophomore Ariana Elegado leads the team with 12.6 points per game, scoring in double figures in seven games... She has scored 20 or more points in four games including a 31 point game against Saint Mary's... For the season she is hitting 38 percent of her shots from the floor and 40 percent from long range. She has dished out 49 assists (39 turnovers) with 24 steals...
Big West by the Numbers...: In five Big West Conference games junior Molly Schelmer leads the team scoring 14.8 points per game and 7.0 boards.. She has made 70 percent of her shots from the floor and has made four of six shots from the line.. Brittany Woodard, second on the team in scoring (13.0) is out four the season... Ariana Elegado is third on the team in scoring with 10.8 points per game, hitting 38 percent of her shots from long range...

Two Local Women's Basketball Players Among Four to Sign NLI's
A total of four high school players have signed national letters of intent to enroll and continue their women's basketball careers at Cal Poly. The announcement was made Thursday by 16th-year Mustang head coach Faith Mimnaugh. The four players to sign NLI's on Wednesday include Hannah Gilbert (Morro Bay, CA), Mary Kate Evans (Atascadero, CA), Sarah Lipton (Irvine, CA) and Rachel Koehler (Billings, MT).
Hannah Gilbert, 6-3, Center, Morro Bay, CA/ Morro Bay HS
Named MVP of the Los Padres League as a junior when she led the team to a 20-4 overall record and 12-0 in league games… She averaged 14.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game while making 73 percent of her shots from the line. As a sophomore she helped lead the team to a 20-6 overall record and a 10-2 mark in league games when she averaged 11.6points and 9.7 rebounds per game…. As a freshman she posted numbers of 5.9 points and 7.4 rebounds in helping the team to an 18-8 overall record and 10-2 league record…Mary Kate Evans, 6-0, Forward, Atascadero, CA/ Atascadero HS
As a junior she averaged 19.3 points, 13 rebounds, 4.4 blocks and 2.9 steals per game in leading her team to an 18-9 overall record and a 9-3 mark in league games earning All CIF honors…. She was named first-team all-league and all-county first-team and Atascadero High School MVP… As a sophomore averaged 11.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game earning All CIF for the second time… Named all-county… Also earned named team MVP… Intends to major in environmental engineering at Cal Poly….
Sarah Lipton, 6-1, Forward, Irvine, CA/ Woodbridge HS
As a junior she averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.63 blocks per game while shooting 40 percent from the floor and 39 percent from long range… She was MVP and First-Team All-Pacific Coast League … She also honored when she was named All-City MVP and invited to the Nike Skills Academy… As a sophomore she was named All-CIF Southern Section, First-Team All-Pacific Coast League and led Woodbridge HS in scoring… As a freshman she named second-team all-league as the team advanced to the 1A CIF Semifinals and the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA Championships. Played club for Cal Swish Black and head coach Russ Davis…
Rachel Koehler, 5-10, Forward, Billings, MT/Billings Senior HS
Led the team in scoring (10 ppg) and rebounding (8 rpg) while adding 1.4 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 block per game… She was named to the first-team all-league… The all-around athlete was named all-state in soccer three times and one in track and field… Finished second in the state in the triple jump and advanced to the championship in the 4 x 100 relay…
