
Mustangs Improve to 5-3 with 72-63 win Over Nevada

RENO, NV --The Cal Poly women's basketball team used a balanced attack when three players scored in double figures with senior Kayla Griffin earning a double-double to pick up a 72-63 win on the road over Nevada on Sunday in Reno. With the win the Mustangs improve to 5-3 on the season while Nevada falls to 3-3.
Griffin earned her double-double when she grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 10 points. Jonea Ervin led the team with 15 points when she made four of eight from the field and hit seven of 10 from the line. The third Mustang in double figures was senior Caroline Reeves with 14 points. Ariana Elegado added eight points while freshman Beth Balbierz came off the bench to add eight of her own.
Danika Sharp led Nevada with 21 points with Chanelle Brennan adding 19 points. Arielle Widman had 10 points in the loss.\
Cal Poly shot 40 percent from the floor while Nevada shot 30 percent. The Mustangs hit only four of 16 from long range with Nevada only five of 15. Nevada outrebounded the Mustangs, 47-40, while Nevada turned the ball over 25 times compared to the Mustangs, 18. Cal Poly scored 18 points off the bench with Nevada scoring only three.
Nevada moved out quickly to open the game and held a 14-5 advantage at the first media timeout (15:35) on a pair of three pointers by Danika Sharp. The Mustangs cut the lead to five, 16-9, with 11:53 left in the half.
Elegado's second three of the half made it a four point game, 20-16, with 8:56 on the clock and a fast break jumper by Beth Balierz made it a two point game, 20-18, at the under eight minute timeout (7:09). The Mustangs took their first lead of the game, 21-20, on a three by Balbierz at 6:36.
Cal Poly made it a four point lead, 26-22, on Balbierz second three of the game with 5:43 left in the half. A jumper by Caroline Reeves near the end of the half gave the Mustangs a 34-32 lead at the break.
Opening the final period the Mustangs made it a seven point game (48-41) when Jonae Erivn broke away for a fastbreak layup off a Maddison Allen defensive rebound with 12:21 left in the game then Caroline Hughes made it a nine point lead with a layup of her own (10:36).
Cal Poly held a 10 point lead (56-46) with 8:02 remaining in the game when Molly Schlemer converted a jump shot and less then two minutes later (6:38), she made it a 12 point game (60-48) after making a layup off an assist from Elegado.
Nevada fought back, cutting the lead to seven (62-55) with 4:14 left in the game on a traditional three point play by Emily Burns and made it four points on a pair of free throws by Sharp with 3:23 left.
Cal Poly made it a seven point lead (66-59) when Allen took a dish from Elegado for a layup with 2:20 on the clock. And with free throws down the stretch the Mustangs settled for a 72-63 win.
