
Cal Poly Outlasts CSU Bakersfield, 75-71

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball team used a hot first half and held on for a 75-71 win over CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference game in Mott Gym on Sunday. With the win the Mustangs improve to 4-2 on the season while CSUB falls to 1-5.
Cal Poly will return to the court on Thursday, Nov. 29 when the team will host St. Mary's at 7 pm.
Cal Poly held CSUB without a field goal for over eight minutes early in the game to build a 23-10 lead with 9:47 in the first half. The Mustangs held their largest lead of the half, 38-20, with 3:40 left in the half on a jumper by Ariana Elegado. Cal Poly settled for a 44-29 lead at the break.
The Mustangs shot 61 percent in the first half, making 17 of 28 field goals and making 10 of 12 free throws.
In the second half the Mustangs held their largest lead of the game, 19 points (52-33), on a layup by Nikol Allison, four minutes into the final period (15:46). Cal Poly maintained a double figure lead until the 7:17 mark when CSUB's Dajy Vines hit a three pointer cutting the lead to 62-53.
The Mustangs came back and held a 15 point lead, 72-57, on a jumper by Jonae Ervin with 4:27 left in the game, but CSUB used a 10-0 run, capped by a layup by Shannon Alyssa to trail by five (72-67) with 26 seconds left in the game.
CSUB cut the lead to two points, 73-71, with 8 seconds on the clock, but a pair of free throws by Ervin sealed the win.
The Mustangs were led by Allison off the bench with a career-high 14 points and eight rebounds. Allison made six of seven from the floor with five of her rebounds coming at the offensive end of the court.
Caroline Reeves added 14 points, hitting six of 11 from the floor and handed out four assists. Brittany Woodard and Ervin helped out with 13 points each.
CSUB's Amber Williams led all-scorers with 21 points with Tyonna Outland adding 12.
Cal Poly shot 48 percent from the floor despite going 0-for-8 from long range. CSUB shot 36 percent from the floor and made seven of 20 from long range. Cal Poly outrebounded the Roadrunners, 53-34, but turned the ball over 11 more times, 25-14.
