Cal Poly returns to the court on Saturday when they travel to Long Beach State for a Big West Conference game at 4 pm.
Senior Kristina Santiago led the Mustangs with 20 points when she hit seven of 18 from the floor. She also added a team-high eight rebounds in the game.
Senior Ashlee Burns and junior Kayla Griffin each added 11 points in the game.
Ashlee Guay led the Matadors with 23 points with Jasmine Erving adding 19 points.
Cal Poly made 40 percent of its shots from the floor and made six of 12 from beyond the arch while corralling 42 rebounds.
Cal State Northridge shot 43 percent form the floor and hit 10 of 16 from long range (63 percent) with 44 rebounds.
Cal Poly turned the ball over just 10 times while CSUN committed 12 turnovers.
Cal Poly took its first lead of the game (8-7) when Brittany Woodard converted a layup with 15:15 left in the first half. The Mustangs made it a four point lead (11-7) at 13:39 when Santiago scored her first field goal of the game.
Ashlee Burns hit a three to give the Mustangs a five point lead, 14-9, with 11:58 left in the half.
Cal State Northridge battled back to tie the game, 15-15, on a layup by Janae Sharpe at 10:01 and took a brief lead at 8:18 when Sharpe made a jumper for a 17-16 advantage.
The Mustangs came right back on a field goal by Santiago to reclaim the lead, 18-17.
CSUN scored five straight points for a 22-18 lead capped by a layup by Sharpe at 7:11.
Cal Poly tied the game, 31-31, on a three pointer by Christine Martin with just over two minutes (2:01) remaining in the half and took the lead (34-31) when freshman Kristen Ale caned a three with 39 seconds remaining.
After a pair of free throws by Ale with nine seconds remaining went into the break holding a 36-32 lead.
In the half the Mustangs made five of seven from long range, but made only 13 of 35 shots from the floor.
In the second half, after CSUN cut the lead to three, Molly Schlemer converted a pair of jumpers to give the Mustangs a seven point advantage (48-41) with 15:49 left in the game.
Field goals by Jonae Ervin and Griffin gave Cal Poly a 10 point advantage (54-44) at 13:51.
Back to back three pointers, the last by Guay, cut the Mustang lead to four (54-50) at the 12:44 mark.
CSUN fought back and tied the game 56-56 on a pair of free throws by Haley White (11:10) and took the lead when Guay hit a three giving the Matadors a 59-56 lead.
Cal Poly regained the lead (62-61) on a jumper by Santiago with 9:42 on the clock and made it 66-61 when she knocked down a pair of free throws.
After a media timeout, Santiago made it a seven point lead (68-61) when she hit a jumper with 7:33 left in the game.
Northridge cut the lead to one (69-68) on a jumper by Erving, but the Mustangs came right back and scored five straight capped by a Santiago layup at 4:05.
The Matadors tied the game 76-76 on a pair of free throws by Haley White with 2:27 on the clock.
Griffin converted one of two free throws to give Cal Poly a one point advantage (77-76) with 1:59 on the clock.
CSUN gained a one point advantage (78-77) when Alama made a layup with 30 seconds left. Alama gave the Matadors the two point win, 79-77, with a single free throw.
