
Mustangs Return to Winning Ways, Defeat Pacific 83-73

STOCKTON, Calif. – Five Cal Poly women's basketball players scored in double figures in leading the Mustangs to an 83-73 Big West Conference win in Stockton Saturday afternoon. With the win Cal Poly improves to 13-8 overall and 9-1 in conference games while Pacific falls to 6-17 and 3-7 in Big West games.
Redshirt freshman Jonae Ervin started and led the team with 17 points as she hit six of 11 shots from the floor and all five from the line. Seniors Desiray Johnston and Rachel Clancy each added 15 points while freshman Molly Schlemer came off the bench to score 12.
Junior Abby Bloetscher was the fifth Mustang in double figures with 10 points.
Freshman Danielle Peacon led the all scorers with 20 points with Jordan Rogers adding 13 and Gena Johnson, off the bench, also scoring 13 points.
Cal Poly hit 29 of 68 shots from the floor good for 42.6 percent while Pacific hit 42.9 percent of its field goals.
The Mustangs made just six of 19 shots from long range with the Tigers hitting five of 12.
Cal Poly forced Pacific into 20 turnovers while committing 15 of its own.
In the first half Pacific edged out to a 21-17 lead when Rogers converted a jumper with 9:23
The Mustangs came back to tie the game at 21-21 with 8:52 left when Clancy hit a three pointer.
The game remained close (36-33) with 5:14 left in the half when the Mustangs pulled away on a 15-6 run and held a 51-39 lead at the break. For the Mustangs it was the highest first half total of the season.
In the second half the Tigers would cut the lead to six (69-63) on a pair of free throws by Rogers, but would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Mustangs return to the court on Feb. 12 when the team will host UC Irvine for a Big West Conference game at 4 pm.
