Cal Poly Drops 9-0 Decision against No. 11 Texas

CATHEDRAL CITY – A run-scoring double by Texas first baseman Lexy Bennett during the third inning accounted for the only run the 11th-ranked Longhorns required on Friday evening as the Cal Poly softball program opened play at the Oregon State-hosted Cathedral City Classic with a 9-0 loss at the Big League Dreams Sports Park.

After Cal Poly starting righthander Rebecca Patton (1-5) retired the Longhorns during the top of the first, Mustang senior catcher Stephanie Correia (above) singled with two outs during the bottom half of the inning before senior designated player Anna Cahn drew a five-pitch walk. Junior right fielder Nicole Lund, however, struck out to end one of Cal Poly's few scoring chances.

Following her run-plating double, Bennett later increased the Longhorns' third-inning lead by scoring on a Correia throwing error. Having retired seven-successive Mustangs and with the lead in hand, Texas starting righthander Blaire Luna (7-1) plunked Correia to open the bottom half of the fourth before again walking Cahn. Luna, however, struck out Lund and freshman second baseman Ashley Romano before freshman pinch runner Jen Walker – on for Cahn – was thrown out attempting to steal second base.

Patton yielded just two Texas hits between the fourth and fifth innings before the Longhorns broke the game open during the top of the sixth with Bennett collecting a two-out, two-run double to plate pinch runner Karina Scott and left fielder Torie Schmidt. The Longhorns (11-2) added five additional runs during the seventh to finalize the scoreline.

Patton struck out five Longhorns in defeat.
