LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A four-run fourth inning by Portland State contributed to the Cal Poly softball team's demise on Sunday morning as the Mustangs completed play at the UNLV-hosted Louisville Slugger Desert Classic with a 7-1 loss versus the Vikings at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.

Portland State (6-5) opened the scoring during the top of the first as catcher Lacey Holm followed center fielder Jenna Krough's leadoff triple with a run-scoring single off of Cal Poly starting righthander Rebecca Patton (1-4).

Mustang freshman shortstop Kim Westlund led off Cal Poly's half of the first with a base hit and senior designated player Anna Cahn (above) opened the second by doubling into left field, but the Mustangs were unable to capitalize off of Portland State starting righthander Nichole Latham (3-3). The Vikings, highlighted by designated player Danielle Lynn's two-run homer, proceeded to further their lead to 5-0 in the top of the third to put the game out of reach.

Cal Poly (2-8) scored its lone run during the bottom half of the third as freshman third baseman Mariah Cochiolo – who reached base after getting plunked by a Latham pitch – scored on a throwing error by Viking first baseman Alexa Morales.

The Mustangs advanced just two more runners past first base the remainder of the morning versus Portland State, which completed the scoring with single runs during the fourth and fifth innings.

Cal Poly returns to action on Friday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. when the Mustangs open the Oregon State-hosted Cathedral City Classic versus No. 13 Texas.
