Cal Poly Splits Saturday Slate at Kajikawa Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Cal Poly softball team opened its Saturday doubleheader at the Arizona State-hosted Kajikawa Classic with a 7-1 trouncing of Bradley, but the Mustangs failed to sustain the momentum and closed second-day action at the tournament with a 7-3 loss versus Indiana.

During the nightcap against the Hoosiers (2-1), Cal Poly (1-3) grabbed the early lead during the bottom of the first inning as senior designated player Anna Cahn drove a two-out single into center field to plate freshman shortstop Kim Westlund.

Mustang starting righthander Rebecca Patton (0-1) retired the initial eight Hoosiers she faced before running into trouble during the third inning. After walking Indiana right fielder Heather Nelson on a 3-2 count, Patton yielded a single to shortstop Breanna Saucedo before walking pinch hitter Lindsay Callanan on a second full count. Catcher Shelby Gogreve then delivered a two-run single and starting righthander Sara Olson (1-0) followed later during the inning with a run-scoring hit. Cahn relieved Patton in the circle, but allowed a three-run homer against left fielder Jenna Abraham as Indiana completed the six-run third inning.

Indiana notched another run during the top of the sixth before Cal Poly finalized the scoring in the bottom half of the inning. Nicole Lund led off the frame with her second homer in as many days before pinch hitter Trista Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to score Patton.

Cahn (above) finished with two hits against Indiana, which defeated Cal Poly for the first time in five meetings.

Cal Poly earned both the program's first victory of the 2011 campaign and first triumph against Bradley during Saturday morning's meeting versus the Braves.

Due to personnel shortages and staffing issues at Arizona State, final statistics were not available as of Saturday evening.
